God's Prosperity
My mother had not worked since she married almost thirty years before, but now she wanted to work. The only work she felt qualified for was factory work, and this she did. The work was hard and tiring for someone of her age beginning again. Her thumb hurt and she wasn't sleeping well at night. My father was away and when he came home, she wanted to be there for him.
Mum and I used to pray together regularly, sometimes daily, and so we sat down one day and thought about this problem of work. We thought about what she would really like to do and then prayed about what God wanted her to do. The answer came:
"I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." John 14:12-14 NIV
The next thing we did was list all the things very specifically that Mum wanted from her work:
A place were she could be useful to Jesus and tell others about Him.
A sit down job.
A job were she could choose when to work and when not to.
Better pay.
Night work.
And we added humorously:
Where she could get her knitting finished.
We prayed all these things and asked God to do what He could.
It just so happened that I was a student nurse (albeit a mature student) on night duty at that time and was astounded when a night duty Sister, whilst on her rounds, asked ME if I knew anyone who wanted to do some night sitting with confused patients. This also included those patients who were suicidal and occasionally those who were dying and had no one to sit with them. Until that night I did not realise there was such a job.
Of course, I asked Mum and she applied quickly and was accepted. All the things we had asked God about had been relevant, and the knitting? Well that was so that the patient didn't feel all the focus was upon them, it was a very useful diversional tactic. Mum had many wonderful opportunities to pray for people and witness about our wonderful King Jesus.
