God's Promise
Liz and I walked and prayed our way around a housing estate in Grimsby. This took some time and we went on through the winter. The vision was to give each home a printed Gospel, but not just to deliver it through the letter box. In doing this we wanted to speak to as many people about Jesus Christ as possible. Many of these people were our neighbours as we lived on that estate.
There were many answers to prayer, and one never to be forgotten, was when a woman down the road reluctantly came to the door. We walked up the drive, saw the light on and knocked. We could hear children's voices but there was no immediate response to our knock. Eventually a woman's voice asked if it was important. "Is it important?"
Liz and I looked at each other and prayed a bit. If we said, "no", then we were confessing that the message of salvation through Jesus Christ was not important. If we said, "yes, but would come back later", something may happen to her and she could die without knowing Christ and then go to hell. If we said "yes", however, the woman might answer the door and be very angry.
We prayed.
After a minute I said "Yes, very important" and waited. Liz smiled encouragingly.
The glass door opened a fraction and it was easy to see this poor woman, robed in a white towel, had been in the bath and had got out specially to answer our call. I felt a bit nervous. It was then Liz's turn to speak, as she told her why it was so important to hear that Jesus loved her very much. Whatever words we used to tell her must have been inspired by the Holy Spirit because, although our friend did briefly look angry, she also seemed very upset. It turned out that her father had recently died and she was going through a tough time.
This dear person took the Gospel we offered her, gave her life to Christ and took her children along to the local church. I moved on and lost touch with her but two or three years later, she sought out my mother at a big Christian meeting in the town and told her how grateful she was to Liz and me. Well, if you should read this, beloved sister, listen, I was so grateful for your encouragement and to hear of your going on in the Lord. May He abundantly bless you.
